A group of six AP Environmental Science students entered the Lexus Final Challenge for a chance to win $50,000. Their project was focused on Waste Awareness and eWaste. Unfortunately they did not win, but did a great job! Here are the components of their project:
Part of their project is also to raise money for the Ecology Club and for Basel Action Network which is an international organization working to remedy the toxic trade (eWaste and other hazardous wastes being dumped or recycled under hazardous conditions in developing countries) They are selling Green Raffle tickets with over $500 in prizes donated from local "green" businesses and restaurants. Prizes will be given away at our Earth Day event, April 19th. We will be cutting out the invasive species of European Buckthorn from our Oak Savannah while our Maine East Rhythm Project (MERP) serenades us with their traditional African drumming. We are also an official drop-off site for an electronic waste with the EPA Great Lakes 2008 Challenge.

For our Waste Education Campaign, we are participating in a competition to create a 10 - 60 sec. Public Service Announcement (PSA) on reducing trash, recycling, or something related. Any schools in the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County's (SWANCC) 23 member communities can participate - click here to see if you qualify. The deadline is March 14 and there are cash prizes! Here is the link for how to get involved. SWANCC_3_Competition_Criteria.doc
We are also posting up pictures from Chris Jordan who uses photography to depict pretty shocking statistics about what we throw away. He has agreed to let us use some of his photos in our poster campaign. Our posters will also include the good news of how Maine East is addressing each trash problem.
